Every thought that we think affects our feelings, physical sensations and behaviors.
Our thoughts are one of the four reasons that can create stress in our life. Most thoughts that we tend to think have an unrealistic aspect to them. Most of the worries and anxieties, perceptions of what might have been or what might have happened have little or nothing to do with the real situation. On an emotional level it could create a variety of different feelings, ranging from sadness to fear and anger. We tend to act out our feelings. Physiologically, our bodies reflect upon our thoughts. Over a period of time health problems can arise as irrational thoughts affect numerous organs and systems in a body. Stress begins with our personal appraisal of a situation and inward assumptions. By applying individualized techniques and learning what works for each of us we can learn how to defuse and dismiss those irrational thoughts and prevent thought created stress from becoming chronic and destructive. The goal is to help ourselves become sufficient in self-helping. We would need to come to the realization that "negative" stress occurs when we perceive that the challenge or life circumstance is dangerous, difficult or unfair and we may lack the resources to cope with it. Educating ourselves could be a great start. There are two categories self-education might fall under:
Body relaxation techniques
Mind training techniques.
Our mind, emotions and bodies are unsupported, so by teaching ourselves mind-body techniques we give ourselves a great tool for self-help.
Body relaxation techniques start with body awareness and learning how we respond to stress. Recognizing internal versus external stressors, body scanning for tensions and tightness, and consciously letting go of the body might help you recognize and understand areas where you react to stress. A stress awareness diary will help to stay aware of the symptoms of the stressful event.
There are a few practical techniques that may offer help as each of us may choose what works best:
Breathing could release tension and bring control
becoming aware of our breathing
diaphragmatic or abdominal breathing
deep breathing
alternative breathing
controlled breathing
Learning progressive relaxation techniques might help in relieving stress and anxiety. By relaxing muscles, the pulse rate slows down; blood pressure stabilizes, as well as respiration and perspiration goes back to normal.
By learning different relaxation methods, such as meditation, Yoga, visualizations, Self-Hypnosis, Autogenic Verbal Formulas and variety of combination techniques we can reverse the effects of stress and bring the body into a state of a healthy balance. Finding the method which will work for you personally will bring the most benefits.
The bottom line is that by recognizing and becoming aware of our thoughts and life's stimulus that affect us, we can learn to control our response and attitudes towards upcoming events. And then, by educating and teaching ourselves how to respond and bring relief can bring peace and balance into our lives
