Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that interferes with the normal functions of the large intestine (colon). It is characterized by a group of symptoms - fatigue, lethargy, crampy abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea.
One in five Americans has IBS, making it one of the most common disorders diagnosed by doctors. It occurs more often in women than in men, most victims are between ages 20-40 with stressful lives and jobs.
There are many scientific articles published in medical journals supporting the value of hypnotherapy with irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and other digestive upsets.
Research done in Whorwell's group have found long term (18 mo or more) follow up response rates on 50 patients with 95% success with classical cases, 43% with atypical cases, and 60% improvement with cases exhibiting significant pathology. Interestingly enough, patients under 50 year's old responded 100% successful.
Gastrointestinal conditions are linked to an emotional state of a person, where repressed emotions are involved. While in hypnosis there is an opportunity for inner mind (subconscious) exploration and resolution. The therapy is designed in conjunction with supportive life-style, dietary approach and supplementation.
